Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club today announced the reassignment of goaltender Justen Maric, 19, to the Battlefords North Stars of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) and defenseman Kayd Ruedig, 16, to the Swift Current Legionnaires U18 AAA program of the Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL).

The move brings the Winterhawks' active roster to 27 players after Marek Alscher, Luca Cagnoni, Josh Davies, Carter Sotheran, Jan Špunar and Ryder Thompson returned from NHL training camps over the past week.

Maric, acquired by the Winterhawks from Moose Jaw via trade in July, manned the cage in Portland's season-opening game in Wenatchee last Friday and made 20 saves in a 6-5 loss. He rejoins Battlefords after posting a sterling 16-1-0 record there last season as they captured the Canterra Seeds Cup as SJHL Champions and advanced to the CJHL Centennial Cup Final.

Ruedig skated in his first WHL games last weekend in Wenatchee and Kelowna after logging one assist in five preseason games earlier this month. Originally selected by Portland in the fourth round, #84 overall, of the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft, Ruedig returns to his home province of Saskatchewan to join fellow Hawks prospect Griffin Darby (2023, Rd. 1) with the U18 Legionnaires of the SMAAAHL.
