Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
Atlanta, Ga. (January 16, 2014) - The 2014 North American Soccer League (NASL) schedule is complete. On Thursday afternoon, the league released its 2014 Fall Season schedule, which will kick off following a break for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
"We believe there will be a great momentum and interest in soccer across North America when our Fall Season kicks off following the FIFA World Cup," said NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson. "We aim to capitalize on that excitement as our clubs keep the action flowing and NASL fans will have the added bonus of several games to enjoy during the work week."
The Atlanta Silverbacks open up 2014 Fall Season play on the road against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday, July 12 before returning home to host a pair of games against FC Edmonton and Minnesota United FC on July 19 and 26 respectively.
Between the Spring and Fall Seasons, each NASL team will play 27 games - nine in the spring and 18 in the fall. The difference in games between the two seasons comes because of the league's break for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which will be played from June 12-July 13.
The announcement of the NASL Fall Season schedule comes just under a month after the Spring Season schedule was released. In Fall Season play, NASL clubs will face each opponent once at home and once away during an 18-game balanced schedule. A total of 90 games will be played over a 17-week period, meaning each club will play one midweek game over the course of the Fall Season.
By the time the NASL Fall season gets underway, the 2014 Spring Season Championship winner will have been crowned. The winner of the Spring Season will host the winner of the Fall Season in NASL Soccer Bowl 2014.
The Silverbacks, who hosted last year's NASL Soccer Bowl 2013 in Atlanta, will enjoy a string of home games during the latter part of the Fall Season, with three home games set for September and another three in October.
Highlights on the Silverbacks' Fall Season schedule include the New York Cosmos' return to Atlanta Silverbacks Park - the place where they won the league's championship game last year. The matchup on August 9 will mark the Cosmos' first trip back to Atlanta since NASL Soccer Bowl 2013.
The month of October will be highlighted by the visit of a trio of regional opponents to Atlanta Silverbacks Park. The Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Tampa Bay Rowdies, and Carolina RailHawks - all based in the southeast - will come to Atlanta over three consecutive weeks, setting up a rivalry month of sorts for the Silverbacks and their home fans.
