Reno Silver Sox News Release
The Reno Silver Sox defeated the first place Chico Outlaws tonight, July 2, in dramatic fashion 10 - 9.
The Silver Sox scored one run in the eighth inning and were able to stop the Outlaws from scoring in the ninth to preserve the win.
Silver Sox pitcher Jason Martinez, who is primarily a reliever, got his first start of the season today. Martinez pitched six strong innings for the Silver Sox, allowing six runs, four earned, and striking out two Outlaws.
The Silver Sox really put it to Outlaw starter Phil Springman. The Silver Sox scored nine runs on Springman, all earned, on ten hits.
The Outlaws struck first with a single run in the second. The Silver Sox then tied the game at one in third when LF Kane Simmons hit his first of two solo homeruns. The Outlaws then opened up the scoring with five runs in the top of the fourth inning, taking the lead 6 - 1. However, the Silver Sox would come back with their best inning of the season so far.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Silver Sox had eight hits and eight runs. SS Chuck Sindlinger started of the inning with a single. Sindlinger then stole second after RF Juan Senreiso struck out. C Jose Rodriguez then came to plate and hit his league leading sixth homerun, a two run shot over the left field wall. 3B Carlos Madrid followed with another single as did DH Cody Nowlin, who advanced Madrid to third. 2B Mike Done then hit a double scoring Madrid and moving Nowlin to third. 1B Ryan Brown then hit his second homerun in as many games, a three run blast over the left field wall. Simmons then hit his second homerun, giving the Silver Sox back to back homeruns. CF Victor Hall then singled, and then stole second and then third. Hall would finish the game with three stolen basesHall. Senreiso then was able to reach first on an error , which also allowed Hall to score. Finally, Springman was pulled after hitting Rodqiguez with a pitch, for Outlaw reliever John Segovia who was able to stop the damage for the Outlaws by getting Madrid to fly out.
That amazing inning for the Silver Sox finally showcased what Silver Sox fans have been waiting to see all season, that the Silver Sox really do have a strong offense. The eight run inning gave the Silver Sox a comfortable 9 - 6 lead. However, the Outlaws fought their way back scoring two runs in the seventh off of Silver Sox relievers Josh Evans and Chris Testa. Evans left the game without recording an out after he pulled his hamstring. Testa went in to relieve Evans in the seventh.
The Outlaws would then tie the game at 9 - 9 off of reliever Adam Nikolic. Nikolic had some control problems walking two batters in a row, and then allowed one run on a balk. Nikolic would recover just in time however and keep the Outlaws from taking the lead.
Going into the bottom of the eighth, the Silver Sox knew that they needed at least one run, hoping that the bullpen could then save the win. The plan didn't seem like it was going to happen after Outlaw starting pitcher turned reliever Nick Singleton struck out the first two Silver Sox batters he faced. Singleton then made one mistake, he let Hall, the league leader in stolen bases, get on base. Hall would steal second, putting himself in scoring position, which was good timing, as Sindlinger followed Hall with an RBI double to left center.
Reliever Mike Peck then came into the game in the ninth to try for the save. Peck faced four batters. Peck got the first batter to fly out. The next batter then reached on an error. However, Peck would then get the next batter to ground out and the last batter to fly out, earning himself his first save of the season.
That one run in the eighth would end up being just enough for the Silver Sox to get the win against the Outlaws. The win also ended the Outlaws 11 game winning streak. The Silver Sox now lead the all-time series against the Outlaws 15 - 8.
The Silver Sox host the Outlaws in the second game of this two game series tomorrow night, July 3. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00 p.m. Also, immediately after the game, fireworks will be set off, courtesy of the Silver Legacy, to help ring in America's birthday.
