Scorpions Sting The Roadrunners

ST. GEORGE, Utah -- The Yuma Scorpions resembled the team that started their season with 10 wins in 11 games with a tremendous offensive display in a 12-2 win over the St. George Roadrunners on Monday.

In the second inning, the Scorpions rattled off six runs, highlighted by a three-run double Maikel Jova which gave Yuma a 6-1 lead.

Yosvany Almario and Pascual Matos led off the inning with consecutive doubles before singles by Nik Crouch and Mike Goss and walks by Tank Peterson and Gabriel Mayorga scored the inning's first three runs. Goss, Mayorga and Crouch scored on Jova's double.

In the third inning, Yuma (14-11) scored five more runs on five hits, including three straight doubles by Matos, Peterson and Crouch and an RBI triple by Goss, which resulted in him scoring after a throwing error.

Scorpions starting pitcher Roger Luque pitched well through seven innings, allowing two runs on nine hits. He gained his second win of the season as he struck out a season-high seven batters.

Goss and Crouch each finished the game 3 for 5 and five other Scorpions hitters had two hits each as they outhit St. George 18-9. Jova had a game-high four RBIs and Goss had three.

The Roadrunners (3-20) scored in the first inning on an RBI single by Geoff Wagner, scoring Marcos Villezcas. They would score again on a solo home run by Steve Wright in the seventh inning.

The two teams face each other again at 6:05 p.m. tonight at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George.
