Zick Shuts Down OC Flyers

July 3, 2007 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release

Coming off a three-game road sweep of St. George, the Armada returned to the friendly confines of Blair Field to take on their cross-county rivals the Orange County Flyers.

The Armada fired on all cylinders winning 10-1 and are now winners of four straight. The Flyers are also streaking, but in the opposite direction as they have dropped their last five.

The Armada were lead on the mound by Jeremy Zick (1-1) who picked up his first win for the Armada. Zick struck out six in a three-hit eight-inning performance in which he allowed only one unearned run. Zick said that most important for him was keeping the fastball down.

"The biggest mistake in my last start was that I did not have good location on my fastball and I got hit hard," said Zick.

But tonight, the Armada were hitting the ball hard.

After scoring three runs in the first inning, the Armada never looked back. LB gave up one run in the fourth inning, but Jorge Araiza singled in Kirk Gross to give the Armada a 4-1 lead. In the fifth inning, Jeff Larue doubled in John Kaplan to stretch the Armada lead to 5-1.

The Armada added four more in the sixth inning, as Cole Cicatelli walked to lead off and Kirk Gross doubled to score Cicatelli. Jorge Araiza added an RBI double of his own to score Gross. Kris Klemm tripled home Gross to stretch the lead to 8-1. Jeff Larue singled home Klemm to widen the gap to 9-1 after six innings.

Cicatelli doubled home Jamie Martinez to add more salt on OC's wound in the seventh, giving the Armada a 10-1 lead.

Taylor George closed out the game in the ninth, retiring the Flyers 1-2-3.

Armada manager Daryl Evans summed up the Armada's overall good performance.

"Good defense, good hitting, good pitching, 1-2-3 Armada win," said Evans.
