South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - After losing the lead in large part to a bad bounce, it didn't look like the Silver Hawks' night Tuesday at Coveleski Stadium. Their fortunes reversed, however, as Andrew Fie's home run in the ninth tied the game and Alberto Diaz's walk-off single in the 10th pushed South Bend past the Peoria Chiefs 6-5.
After Fie tied the game in the ninth, Yonata Ortega (WP, 2-2) tossed a scoreless top of the tenth to bring the Silver Hawks back to the plate. With Ronny Morla (LP, 1-1) pitching, Matt Davidson led off with a triple to right and was replaced by pinch runner David Narodowski at third. After David Nick grounded out, Diaz singled to left to score Narodowski and give the Silver Hawks the victory. South Bend is now 4-3 in extra innings games and has walked off at home three times.
Before the late-inning heroics, the Silver Hawks relinquished their lead on an unfortunate play. With South Bend up 4-3 in the eighth and Matt Cerda at second, Mario Mercedes hit a routine grounder to third baseman Bobby Borchering. The ball took an unexpected hop and hit Borchering on the head, however, allowing Cerda to tie the game and Mercedes to advance to second on the throw. Hak-Ju Lee followed that up with a two-out single to drive home Mercedes and put the Chiefs up 5-4.
Down 3-2 entering the sixth, South Bend took the lead with two runs off Peoria starter Ryan Searle (ND). Borchering and Davidson both singled, with Borchering later scoring on a Diaz RBI double to tie the game. Matt Helm then singled to pick up his second RBI of the ball game and move the Silver Hawks in front. With Helm at first and Diaz at third, Tyson Van Winkle grounded in to a double play to end the threat.
The Chiefs struck first off South Bend starter Mike Belfiore (ND). In the first, Logan Watkins reached first on an infield single and stole second to put himself in scoring position. Justin Bour then singled to drive home Watkins and put the Chiefs up 1-0 early. The Silver Hawks responded quickly, however, as Chris Owings hit a solo home run in the bottom half, his third of the season, to tie the game at one.
Peoria regained the lead 3-1 with one run in the second and fourth. South Bend chipped away at the lead on a Matt Helm two-out RBI single in the fourth, brining South Bend within one at 3-2.
The Silver Hawks will continue their three-game series with the Peoria Chiefs (Chicago Cubs) on Wednesday at 7:00 PM. RHP Charles Brewer (3-3, 1.41 ERA) takes the mound for South Bend while Peoria counters with RHP Jeff Antigua (1-4, 4.82 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
