Burlington Bees News Release
Comstock Park, MI (June 1, 2010) - The Burlington Bees trailed by as many as four runs on Monday afternoon, but pounded out five runs on nine hits against the bullpen of the West Michigan Whitecaps to pick up an 8-4 win in the series opener at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The Whitecaps put the Bees behind the eight-ball early, plating three first inning runs against starter Matt Mitchell. Jordan Lennerton pounded a two-run double to right-center, and Michael Rockett drove home a run with an RBI twobagger of his own. West Michigan added an unearned run in the fourth on a Jimmy Gulliver sacrifice fly following a pair of Ryan Wood throwing errors.
The Bees' bats were shut down through the first five innings by Whitecaps righty Jacob Turner. Turner, the Tigers' top prospect according to Baseball America, twirled five shutout innings with five strikeouts and no walks before encountering trouble in the sixth. Joey Lewis and Carlo Testa picked up back-to-back singles, and Rene Oriental reached on an error to chase Turner from the game and give the Bees their first run. Two more came home on a Hilton Richardson single, and the tying run crossed on Deivy Batista's RBI single, a play on which Richardson was thrown out attempting to score the go-ahead run.
Both offenses remained silent until the ninth, but both had their scoring chances. The Bees had two men on with one out in both the seventh and eighth before failing to score, and West Michigan had runners at second and third in the eighth when Ryan Dennick (W, 1-1) snared Jamie Johnson's rocket back through the box to keep the contest knotted at four.
The Bees broke through in the ninth, however, against Jose Ortega. With J.D. Alfaro at second after a single and a stolen base, Lewis doubled inside the first base bag to drive home the go-ahead run. Juan Graterol added an RBI single on a play where Testa was thrown out when catcher Billy Alvino hung on to the ball after a violent collision at the plate that had Alvino down for a moment. Wood's two-run duck snort into right field added the Bees' final insurance runs to make the score 8-4.
Dennick earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief. Lewis had three hits, including the go-ahead double. In total, six Bees enjoyed multi-hit days. The Bees take on the Whitecaps again Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. Central time. Listen live on GoBees.com or via tape delay in the evening on News Radio 1490 KBUR at 6:30.
