Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - Didi Gregorius collected four hits and scored two runs and Chris Richburg hit a two-run home run to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 9-2 victory over the Kane County Cougars before a crowd of 8,366 on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field.
Gregorius had three singles and a double as part of a 12-hit Dayton attack. The Dragons have collected at least 10 hits in five of their last six games.
Kane County's Conner Crumbliss hit the second pitch of the game for a home run to right field, his first of the year, to give the Cougars the early lead.
Dayton answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Gregorius singled to left with one out, went to second on a passed ball, and scored on a double to right-center field by Henry Rodriguez to tie the game. Rodriguez scored on a two-out single to right by Josh Garton to give Dayton a 2-1 lead.
Kane County got the game back even in the third, scoring a run without a hit in the inning against Dragons starting pitcher Pedro Villarreal to make it a 2-2 game.
Dayton took the lead right back in the bottom of the third when Andrew Means walked, raced around to third on a single to right by Gregorius, and scored when Rodriguez grounded into a double play to give the Dragons a 3-2 lead.
In the fourth, Dayton scored again. Garton was hit by a pitch to start the inning, stole second, and scored on Frank Pfister's RBI single to left to make it 4-2.
Dayton broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning, keyed by a pair of RBI doubles by Gregorius and Tommy Nurre and Richburg's two-run home run, his fifth homer of the season.
Villarreal worked the first five innings, allowing four hits and two runs with four walks and four strikeouts to earn the victory. He improved to 3-3 on the season. Chase Ware fired four scoreless innings for his second save for the Dragons.
Dayton (21-31) will host Kane County (22-31) again on Wednesday in the second game of the three-game series at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. J.C. Sulbaran (3-3, 5.63) will start for Dayton against Kane County's Murphy Smith, who will make his first appearance with the Cougars. Smith was 3-5 with a 6.19 ERA with Stockton, the Athletics' high-A club, earlier this season.
