Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Davenport, IA - The Quad Cities River Bandits blasted three home runs, two of them off the bat of Miguelangel Sierra, as they defeated the Clinton LumberKings 9-1 on Wednesday night at Modern Woodmen Park. All nine players in the Bandits lineup reached base at least once.
The River Bandits took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Marty Costes singled through the left side to start the attack and was joined on base by Ruben Castro, who walked. Costes was caught stealing third for the first out with Castro advancing to second. A passed ball allowed Castro to move to third and another walk put David Hensley on first base. Hensley broke toward second base where he was caught stealing, but Castro scored from third on the throw to give the Bandits a 1-0 lead.
Eugene Helder quickly evened the score in the top of the second. Clinton's designated hitter drove an offering from Jairo Solis high onto the walkway in front of the video board in left center for a solo home run, his sixth of the season.
Sierra's first home run put the Bandits back in control in the bottom of the frame and a big third inning widened the gap even more. With one out, Marty Costes lined his second home run of the campaign over the left field wall to push the lead to 3-1. Castro singled and Chandler Taylor worked a base on balls to put two on base for Colton Shaver. Shaver took advantage with a double into the left field corner that scored both runners and made it 5-1. Alfredo Angarita tacked on another with his base hit into right field that plated Shaver.
In the bottom of the fourth, Logan Mattix worked a one-out walk and raced to third on a double from Costes. With two runners in scoring position, Castro singled in front of the left fielder, scoring both Mattix and Castro to open an 8-1 advantage. The final damage was done in the seventh when Sierra just cleared the wall in left over a leaping Ariel Sandoval for his second round-tripper of the night.
The River Bandits outhit the LumberKings 11-7 in the game. Costes led all players with three hits and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Castro, Angarita and Sierra all added two hits of their own.
Jairo Solis, the Bandits starter on the mound, went 5.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits. He struck out seven and issued one walk while picking up his second win of the season. Edgardo Sandoval earned the save by tossing 3.1 scoreless innings outs of the pen. Sandoval scattered four hits and recorded five strikeouts.
The River Bandits (20-18, 60-48) resume their series against the Clinton LumberKings (19-19, 58-50) on Thursday night at Modern Woodmen Park. First pitch is once again scheduled for 6:35 p.m. The Bandits will send RHP Chad Donato (0-0, 3.24) to the mound as the LumberKings counter with RHP Scott Boches (2-3, 3.23).
