Bees Fall in Series Finale After Late Surge from Snappers

Burlington, IA. - It was a packed house for the Burlington Bees (11-24,41-63) series finale against the Beloit Snappers (22-14,54-51), but the Bees ended up splitting their four game series after losing 8-4. Mitchell Jordan (5-2) earned his fifth victory after throwing five innings, allowing just one run on four hits, and striking out five. Zack Kelly (2-2) suffered his second loss after a rough game in relief where he pitched two innings, allowed four runs on three hits, walked one, and struck out three.

Olmeda starts scoring off

After two and a half scoreless innings, Alexis Olmeda gave the Bees the first run of the game on a solo homerun to left for his third of the season, making the score 1-0 Bees.

Snappers tie it in the fifth and take lead in sixth

Mickey McDonald led the fifth inning off with a single, and all the way to third base by himself after stealing second for his 22nd stolen base and going to third after a wild pitch. That set up a sacrifice fly for Nick Allen who drove McDonald in on a deep fly to center to tie the game at 1-1.

Austin Beck led the sixth inning off with his 20th double of the year and Hunter Hargrove drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. Logan Farrar then drove in 46th run of the season on a single to center to give the Snappers a 2-1 lead. Then Miguel Mercedes stepped up and busted the game wide open after crushing a three run homerun to right for his second of the season, giving Beloit a 5-1 lead.

Olmeda gets Bees back within one

After the seventh inning stretch, Julio Garcia got on with his 16th double of the year and Alvaro Rubalcaba drew a walk to give the Bees runners on first and second with no outs. Then Olmeda decided to crush his second homerun to left for three runs, getting the Bees back within a run, but still down 5-4. Burlington was set up later in the inning after Zane Gurwitz and Torii Hunter reached base and Leonardo Rivas advanced them to second and third with a sac bunt. However, Kevin Williams Jr and Spencer Griffin both struck out and the Snappers escaped the inning with the lead.

Snappers take control with three run inning

The momentum quickly shifted back to the Snappers side, after putting three runs on the board in the next inning. Hargrove led the inning off with a single and Farrar reached base after a throwing error by Olmeda at first. Mercedes got the bases loaded after a single to shallow center, and Jordan Devencenzi gave the Snappers a 6-4 lead after drawing a bases loaded walk. Jesus Lage then came out of nowhere and delivered his first double of the year to drive in two more runs, giving the Snappers an 8-4 lead.

Double play erases possible Bees comeback

The Bees managed to make things interesting in the ninth, after Olmeda, Hunter, and Rivas all drew walks to load the bases with just one out. Williams then hit a hard line drive into left that was looking like a single, but Lazaro Armenteros sprinted in to make the catch in time and ended up throwing out Hunter at second for a double play, giving the Snappers an 8-4 win.

Another good start from Ortega

It was frustrating to see another quality start from a Bees starter and not see them earn a victory. Ortega went five innings for the second time in his past three starts, allowed just one run on three hits, two walks, and struck out six. In his past three starts, he has gone 14 innings, allowed just four runs, twelve hits, and has struck out 15.

Welcome back Alexis

After spending some time in Salt Lake, Alexis Olmeda was back in a Bees uniform last night, and delivered with his two homerun to drive in all four Bees runs. Although the Bees had a good night on offense, finishing the game with eight hits, drawing five walks, and only having eight strikeouts. Unfortunately, no one else could deliver a big hit for the Bees, but they still had a good game from Gurwitz and Garcia, who reached finished the game with two hits.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will play another opponent from the state of Wisconsin, as they will head up to Appleton to take on the Wisconsin

Timber Rattlers. Like the Bees, Wisconsin hasn't had the second half they had hoped for as they are currently second to last in the division and are only 17-20. The Bees have not announced a starter for tomorrow's game, but it would most likely be Michael Santos, who started the game after Ortega's last start. Wisconsin is expected to start Bowden Francis, who is 5-7 with a 4.66 ERA in 17 starts. Francis is a big strikeout pitcher, as he has thrown 83 strikeouts, in 94.2 innings this season.
