Turlock, California (January 25, 2020)- The Dallas Sidekicks lost on the road against the Turlock Cal Express 8-5. The Sidekicks next game will at home Jan. 31st, 2020 at 7.30PM CT against the Florida Tropics at the Allen Event Center in Allen, TX for Youth Soccer Night.
The first quarter started, and Turlock took multiple shots on goal against Sidekicks goalkeeper Juan Gamboa. The Express kept possession and their attacking approached paid off when Adrian Gutierrez scored and brought Turlock up 1-0. The Sidekicks got a set piece and set it up but weren't able to put one into the net. Gamboa continued to save shots from Turlock as they peppered the goal with shots. Sidekicks midfielder Billy O'Dwyer stole the ball and created a nice counter attack and tapped the ball to Sidekicks player Arthur Ivo who took a strong shot on goal, but the shot hit the crossbar. The Sidekicks quickly got the ball back and Sidekicks defender Kleber Bismarck passed a solid ball to Sidekicks forward Luiz Felipe Andrade and tied the game 1-1. The quarter ended with everything all tied up.
Early in the second quarter Ivo fouled Express player Anibal Echeverria, but Turlock did not put the ball into the net on their resulting set piece. The Express continued to pepper Gamboa with multiple shots and kept possession. Both sides had sloppy footwork which resulted in numerous turnovers, but Ivo was able to make a play and easily sunk one into the back of the net and past Turlock goalkeeper Edgar Martinez to bring the Sidekicks their first lead of the game 2-1. It wasn't long until a turnover by Dallas resulted in another goal for Turlock, when Express player Anibal Echeverria scored to tie the game 2-2. The game got chippy toward the end of the quarter and the Sidekick went on the powerplay. During the powerplay Turlock fouled Sidekicks player Victor Almendariz which resulted in a penalty shot for the Sidekicks. The shot was taken by Ivo and he nailed it into the net to bring the Sidekicks up 3-2 and both teams went to the locker rooms for halftime.
The Sidekicks came out of the locker room for the third quarter with a power play and Ivo scored a hat trick and increased the Sidekicks lead 4-2. Turlock quickly answered back when Adrian Gutierrez scored to cut the Sidekicks lead by one to 4-3. Turlock then struck again when Luis Brambila put one past Gamboa to tie the game 4-4 with less than ten minutes left in the quarter. Then with only minutes left in the third quarter, Turlock got the lead 5-4 when Ivan Rios put one into the net and the quarter ended with the Express in the lead.
Both teams came out for the last quarter trying to move up in the Western Conference rankings with a win. Possession was equal between both teams during the beginning of the quarter, with neither team creating any plays. Turlock, however, made some space and took advantage of a Sidekicks defensive player being out of position and Joaquin Raya got his first goal of the night and increased the Express' lead by two to 6-4. Turlock's Cristian Valadez was called for a two-footed tackle and the Sidekicks got a power play, but Turlock killed it. The tables then turned when Sidekicks player Diego Burato was given a blue card for charging and the Express went on the power play. The Express scored on the power play and Echeverria got his second of the night and increased their lead 7-4. Ivo quickly took the ball from Turlock and got his fourth goal of the night and cut the Express' lead 7-5. With less than two minutes left, the Sidekicks put in Gustavo Piedra as the sixth attacker and Turlock's Luis Brambila got an empty-net goal to increase their led 8-5. The game ended with Turlock walking away with the win.
