Franck Tayou tapped in a pass off the boards from Jesus Pacheco with 2 minutes, 56 remaining to lift the Ontario Fury to a 6-5 victory over the Cal Turlock Express on Friday night at Toyota Arena.
The Express led twice in the game, but the Fury seemed to wrest control in the second quarter. Maicon de Abreu scored just 1:02 into the second period to tie the game, then he scored the go-ahead goal at the 7:53 mark to give Ontario its first lead. Ontario widened the lead on a free kick, as Juan Carlos Gonzalez settled a ball off the boards from Evan McNeley and blasted it home to give the Fury a 4-2 lead at the half.
But Turlock would not go down quietly, taking advantage of Ontario miscues. Cristian Valadez intercepted an Ontario pass and went the other way. His shot changed directions and flew past goalie Chris Toth to make it a one-goal game.
Ontario got the two-goal lead back thanks to a Turlock mistake. Express goalkeeper Edgar Martinez whiffed on a clearing attempt, and the ball bounced free in front of his goal. McNeley was on the spot to tap the ball into the Express net and a 5-3 lead after three.
As Ontario tried to control the ball in the fourth quarter, Turlock was able to counterattack to tie the game. Juan Manuel Rojo made it 5-4 at the 6:01 mark, then Anibel Echeverria tapped home a ball from Valadez on another Ontario turnover to tie the game with 5:07 to go.
Gonzalez ended the game with a goal and two assists, while de Abreu had two goals and McNeley added a goal and assist. Toth had 13 saves in the win.
Ontario returns to action at 6 p.m. Feb. 1 as they will take on the Soles de Sonora. Tickets for the game can be purchased at the Toyota Arena box office, online at Ticketmaster.com or by contacting the Ontario Fury's offices at 909-457-0252. The game will feature special jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game to benefit Casa Colina Medical Center.
