Biloxi Shuckers News Release
JACKSON, TN - A three-run bottom of the fifth inning was the difference on Wednesday night as the Jackson Generals (55-47, 16-17) topped the Biloxi Shuckers (60-42, 19-13) 3-0 at the Ballpark at Jackson.
RHP Joel Payamps (W, 9-3) kept the Biloxi bats in check, not allowing a base runner his first time through the lineup. The Shuckers put together a threat in the top of the fourth when Corey Ray doubled and Troy Stokes Jr. was hit by a pitch, but Payamps induced a 6-4-3 double play and a groundout that kept the Shuckers off the board. All told the righty hurled seven innings and allowed just two hits while striking out eight.
For Biloxi, LHP Kodi Medeiros (L, 7-5) faced some trouble in the first but got his own double play to strand a runner. He retired the next nine men in a row before issuing a walk in the fourth, his lone free pass of the night.
Jackson broke the deadlock in the fifth. Jose Vinicio was hit by a pitch, putting him on base for Payamps. The pitcher laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded on one hop by Lucas Erceg, who threw it to second to try and get Vinicio. The speedy shortstop beat the throw, and when Luis Aviles Jr. attempted to throw out Payamps at first, his toss sailed into the Shuckers dugout, sending Vinicio in to score the first run of the game. Ben DeLuzio followed with an RBI double, then stole third and scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 Generals.
The Shuckers managed a leadoff base runner in the eighth on a single by Gabriel Noriega, but RHP Tommy Eveld (H, 1) coaxed a pair of fly outs and struck out Ray to end the frame. In the top of the ninth, Keston Hiura singled with one out against RHP Kevin Ginkel (S, 1). The righty struck out the next two batters to secure his first save of the season.
The two teams meet for game four of a five-game series at 6:05 PM on Thursday night. The Shuckers are scheduled to send RHP Thomas Jankins (9-5, 4.45) to the hill opposite Generals RHP Bo Takahashi (2-3, 6.02). The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
