Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BILOXI, MS - Despite facing three different four-run deficits, the Biloxi Shuckers (32-32) used four straight hits in the ninth inning to walk off the Chattanooga Lookouts (32-28), 8-7, in the series-opener at MGM Park. The walk-off win was Biloxi's fourth in 2023, and snapped a four-game losing streak.
On a rehab assignment from the Brewers, Shuckers' starter Jason Alexander made his first start in the Southern League since 2021 with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The Lookouts offense, fresh off 29 runs over their final three games against the Rocket City Trash Pandas, scored early after Reece Hinds singled home Blake Dunne in the first. They then tallied two more runs in the second off Hinds' double to left, making it 3-0.
Biloxi, however, scrapped back in the bottom of the inning with Tristen Lutz's RBI groundout that scored Freddy Zamora. The Lookouts got the back in the next half-inning when Daniel Vellojin drove in Ivan Johnson with a single to right.
Down 5-1, Tyler Black smashed a two-run home run to left-center, tying Jeferson Quero and Jackson Chourio for the team lead. The home run was part of a four-hit night for Black. He also notched his 38th stolen base of the year, placing himself alone in second place in Biloxi's single-season stolen base records.
Chattanooga got both runs back in back-to-back innings. They made it 6-3 in the sixth off an error and extended the lead back to four with an RBI single from Blake Dunne, his team-leading fourth hit of the night.
The Shuckers started the comeback in the seventh with a two-RBI double from Carlos Rodriguez. Then, after 1.1 scoreless innings from Zach Vennaro, the Shuckers entered the ninth down by two.
Black led off the inning with a single, followed by a walk to Quero. Wes Clarke then drove in Black with a single to cut the deficit to one. Rodriguez then plated pinch-runner Isaac Collins with another single before Lutz hammered a line drive to center off the bat at 111 MPH to secure the walk-off win. Vennaro (2-2) earned the win for Biloxi while Ryan Meisinger (3-1) took the loss for Chattanooga.
The two teams will meet for Biloxi's 2023 Camp Day tomorrow at 11:05 a.m. Carlos Rodriguez is expected to start for Biloxi against Joe Boyle. All military personnel can receive a $3 discount on Dugout Box and Reserved Level tickets with a valid military ID for Military Wednesday presented by Keesler Federal Credit Union.
