Shrimp Fall to Shuckers 7-2

BILOXI, Miss. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (52-59, 23-18) fell to the Biloxi Shuckers (66-45, 25-16) by a 7-2 score in the second game of the five-game series at MGM Park on Friday night.

Biloxi left-handed starting pitcher Cameron Roegner (4-4) earned the victory, working five innings where he allowed two runs (both earned) on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Miami Marlins right-handed starting pitcher Pablo Lopez, with Jacksonville on a major league rehab assignment, took the loss. He worked two-thirds of the first inning where he allowed three runs (all earned) on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Jacksonville struck the scoreboard first, with a top of the first inning solo home run by Lewin Diaz to take a 1-0 lead. Biloxi answered against Lopez in the bottom of the first. Ryan Aguilar's solo home run tied the game at 1-1, then Dillon Thomas provided an RBI triple to push Biloxi in front 2-1. The Shuckers made it a three-run inning when Thomas scored on an RBI groundout by Jake Gatewood to grow the lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the second against Jacksonville right-handed relief pitcher Chad Smith, Cooper Hummel added a two-run homer for Biloxi to grow the lead to 5-1.

The Jumbo Shrimp plated a run in the top of the sixth inning when an error by Biloxi shortstop Bruce Caldwell on a groundball hit by Stone Garrett brought home Diaz to make it a 5-2 game. The Shuckers responded by hitting a pair of solo home runs by C.J. Hinojosa and Cooper Hummel off Jacksonville left-handed relief pitcher McKenzie Mills to grow the lead to 7-2, which would be the final.

Jacksonville left-handed relief pitcher Alex Vesia made his Southern League debut, working two scoreless innings with five strikeouts, including striking out the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.

The Jumbo Shrimp will continue their five-game series with the Biloxi Shuckers at MGM Park at 7:35 p.m. eastern on Saturday night. Right-handed pitcher Jorge Guzman (4-10, 4.14 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Biloxi right-handed pitcher Drew Rasmussen (1-2, 3.60 ERA).
