V for Victory: Varsho Guides Generals to 4-1 Triumph

Jackson Generals News Release
Jackson, Tenn. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, got help from a few new faces and relied on some old ones on Friday evening, taking down the Mobile BayBears 4-1 at The Ballpark at Jackson. Recent arrivals Seth Beer and Camden Duzenack each drove in runs in their debuts at The Ballpark at Jackson, helping the Generals (62-47) climb to a season-high 15 games over .500.
After an outstanding month of July, Matt Peacock (8-3, 2.32 ERA) began August with another strong effort, weathering some early difficulties with his control. Peacock walked two men in the first inning and two more in the third inning, but he bore down to prevent Mobile from taking the lead. Peacock induced his league-leading 15th groundball double-play to end the third inning, and he lengthened his lead by coaxing his 16th twin-killing to record the first two outs of the fifth inning.
Trouble struck when Brandon Marsh cracked a solo shot to right field with two outs in the fifth, but the BayBears (41-68) could manage no other damage against Peacock, who departed after seven innings with five strikeouts and five hits allowed. Miguel Aguilar picked up his fifth hold of the year with an inning of scoreless work in the eighth, and West Tunnell (S, 1) earned his first Double-A save with a scoreless ninth.
After L.T. Tolbert led off the bottom of the first with a hit, Jackson didn't get another until a lead-off single in the fourth by Daulton Varsho. Pavin Smith followed by bouncing a double down the right field line to put two men in scoring position as Seth Beer strode to the plate. The 22-year-old Beer, a fresh acquisition from a trade between the Diamondbacks and Houston Astros this week, promptly roped a single to right field to put the Generals in front 2-0. Duzenack, in his first start at Double-A, began the following inning with a towering home run off of Mobile's Greg Mahle (0-2, 3.27 ERA) that dropped over the 24-foot wall in left field, making the Jackson lead 3-1 at the time.
Varsho would add a solo shot of his own in the seventh inning against Ryan Clark to complete the scoring for the home side, which finished 1-for-7 with men in scoring position. Varsho recorded his fourth game of the year with a home run and a steal; at the Major League level, the only catchers to record that many homer-and-steal games in a single season include Carlton Fisk, Sandy Alomar, Russell Martin, and Ivan Rodriguez.
