Spokane Indians News Release
SPOKANE, WA - Starting pitcher Jacob Shortslef (1-0) didn't make the best first impression with Spokane last summer, and he's not taking any chances with his second. The burly right-hander from Hannibal, NY went five scoreless innings and was backed up by a big night from the Indians offense as Spokane thumped Everett 9-3 in front of 4,839 fans at Avista Stadium for Bark at the Park Night presented by KAYU FOX 28, 103.9 BOB FM, Magic 790, and Nspire Coeur d'Alene.
Shortslef, a 26th round pick in 2015, joined the Indians late last summer and was touched up for four runs in just 3.1 innings over three appearances. That seems like a distant memory now though, as he limited the potent Aquasox lineup to just three hits over five frames while walking one and fanning four on a balmy evening in Spokane. Tyler Ferguson followed in typically dominant fashion as the former Vanderbilt star struck out five over three innings to raise his season total to 20 punch outs in just 10.2 innings.
Spokane's offense supported Shortslef's strong start with two runs in the fourth against Everett starter Brandon Miller (0-1) and a five-spot in the fifth against reliever Lane Ratliff. The Indians tallied another pair of runs in the seventh to cap their scoring. Seth Spivey led the charge with three doubles, while shortstop Elio Castillo picked up three RBI filling in for Charles Leblanc at shortstop. All but one player in the lineup picked up at least one hit with Preston Scott and Todd McDonald each finishing with two base knocks and two RBI in the win.
