South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Duluth, GA - The South Carolina Stingrays scored with only :31 seconds left, but it was not enough as the Stingrays fell to the Gwinnett Gladiators by a score of 2-1 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
"We are getting tired," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "We've been skating a long time undermanned, and its starting to take its toll on the guys."
The Gwinnett Gladiators failed to score a goal when they played the Stingrays last night, but they got on the board first in the game tonight. At 14:19, Matt Siddall connected on a one-timer in the slot from JC Sawyer to get his fifth goal of the game and give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead after one period of play.
In the second period, the Rays had two opportunities to crack goaltender Joe Fallon, but were unable to do so. Early in the period Maxime Lacroix had a breakaway but was turned aside by Fallon, and Jeff Corey had a chance on a two on one while short handed but couldn't get the puck past the Gwinnett net-minder. With less than a minute to go in the period, Jordan Fox was able to put a shot over the down and out Michal Neuvirth to give the Gladiators a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Early in the third period, Neuvirth went down with a groin injury and was unable to finish out the game. That brought out emergency backup goaltender John Havrilack playing in his first action this year. Late in the game, with the goaltender pulled, and on a power play, Maxime Lacroix got his 14th goal of the year on a tip from Travis Morin. The goal came at 19:29 and was assisted by Morin and Pierre-Luc O'Brien.
The winning goaltender was Fallon who stopped 20 of the 21 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Neuvirth who stopped 20 of the 22 shots he faced in 42:12 he faced. Havrilack stopped all ten shots he faced in the 16:43 he was on the ice. The Rays went 1-4 on the power play while killing all four short handed situations they faced. Scott Romfo had to leave the game in the third period with a broken finger.
We'll be back tomorrow afternoon when the Rays return home to finish their three in three against the Mississippi Sea Wolves. Game time will be at 5:00 P.M.
