Victoria, B.C. - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Bakersfield Condors met in the first game of a three-game set in both teams first game of the New Year. Goaltender Todd Ford started in net for the Kings while the Condors countered with Ryan Nie.

Curtis Billsten gave Victoria a 1-0 lead when he collected his seventh of the year on the power play at the 3:03 mark. Wes Goldie would make it a 2-0 game by putting home a rebound on the power play; it was Goldie's 28th marker of the season. The teams head to their locker rooms with the Kings up 2-0 after the first period.

Bakersfield opened the second frame with Matt Pope slapping a one-timer low blocker side past Ford for the power play goal. Just over a minute later also on the power play, Dylan Yeo capitalized thumping a slap shot from the point to beat Nie. Victoria led 3-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Victoria held off the Condors offensive pressure through the period's first 15 minutes. Jacob Dietrich stretched the Kings' lead when he banged home a rebound to give the Kings a 4-1 lead with five minutes to play. Bakersfield would make it 4-2 with 1:26 to play, but a few moments later Billsten iced the win with a shot from the red line into the empty net. Salmon Kings 5 Condors 2.

Victoria finished 2/9=22% on the power play, while Bakersfield finished 2/10=20%. Final shots were 39-25 for the Kings.

The Salmon Kings and Condors meet tomorrow night for the second of the three games set. Puck drop goes at 7:00 p.m.
