Condors comeback comes up just short, 2-1

VICTORIA, B.C. - The Bakersfield Condors comeback attempt came up just short, 2-1, against the Victoria Salmon Kings before 4,633 fans at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre Saturday night.

The Condors (11-17-4, 26pts) out-shot the Salmon Kings, 11-5, in the opening frame, but neither team found the back of the net in the first 20 minutes and the game remained scoreless heading into the second period.

The scoreless tie stayed intact through the first 14 minutes of the second stanza, but Victoria (23-9-2, 48pts) netted a pair of tallies just 1:06 apart late in the frame to take a 2-0 lead. The Salmon Kings out-shot Bakersfield, 13-10, in the period and took their two-goal advantage to the final frame.

The Condors cut the Victoria lead to just one goal late in the third period, when C Dave Bonk netted his eighth of the season on the power play at 15:50. The Condors kept the pressure on and pulled G Yutaka Fukufuji for an extra attacker in the final minute, but the equalizer eluded them and Victoria held on to win, 2-1. Fukufuji stopped 27 of 29 shots in the game for Bakersfield.
