Hickory, N.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (41-43, 6-8) used a five-run second inning to defeat the Hickory Crawdads 5-4 in a rain-shortened game that lasted seven innings at L.P. Frans Stadium on Wednesday night. The Shorebirds put an end to a four-game losing streak and avoid the sweep in the process.

The Shorebirds were first to strike in the second inning. Crawdads starter Matt Thompson threw 11 straight balls to open the inning and walked the bases loaded. Then, Michael Ohlman scored on a wild pitch to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Thompson walked Mikey Planeta to load the bases again. Joe Oliveira hit a two-run single to right-center field to give the 'Birds a 3-0 lead. The next batter, Ty Kelly, hit a two-run single into center field to increase the lead to 5-0.

The Crawdads got a run across in the bottom of the second. Alejendro Selen was caught between second and third, but came into score as Garabez Rosa tagged out Jake Skole in a rundown between first and second.

In the fifth, Hickory added two runs to cut the deficit to 5-3. Odubel Herrera hit a two-run single to right-center field to plate Jake Skole and Jonathan Roof.

Shorebirds starter Tim Berry earned the win over five innings, his first since May 14. Berry allowed just six hits and three runs. He also struck out five and walked just one batter. Berry has allowed just 14 hits in his last 20 innings (four starts).

The Crawdads added a run in the seventh inning against Josh Dowdy. Roof was issued a leadoff walk and reached second on a throwing error by Dowdy. Then, Christian Villanueva hit a double to the warning track in left-center to score Roof. With runners at first and third and two outs, D.J. Ferguson entered for Dowdy and struck out Kellin Deglan to end the threat.

Rain started to pour down just before the start of the eighth inning and the teams were pulled off the field. They never returned as the game was called about 40 minutes later.

The Shorebirds travel to Charleston, S.C. on Thursday, July 7 to take on the RiverDogs at 7:05 p.m. RHP Scott Copeland takes the mound for Delmarva.
