Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Shane Greene spun 6.0 innings of one-run ball, and the RiverDogs held off a late GreenJackets rally, as Charleston edged Augusta, 5-4, in South Atlantic League action Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 2,596 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Charleston avoided the sweep in improving to 6-8 in the second half and 32-52 overall, while Augusta slipped to 5-9 and 36-48.
Augusta took a 1-0 lead for the third night in a row, as a two-out rally produced a marker off Greene (3-9). Chris Lofton singled on a line drive to centerfield, stole second base, and came around to score when Carlos Willoughby stroked a RBI single up the middle.
Charleston answered back against Taylor Rogers (6-8) to move in front, 2-1, in the bottom of the third inning.
Mike Ferraro singled, and was sacrificed to second base by Garrison Lassiter, who reached safely himself on an error by Rogers. Eduardo Sosa then pushed both runners into scoring position, as Augusta third baseman Adam Duvall committed a fielding error. Anderson Feliz produced the tying tally with a walk, and Kevin Mahoney powered a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give Charleston the advantage.
The RiverDogs' lead swelled to 3-1 in the last of the fourth inning, as the bottom half of the order wreaked havoc again.
Ferraro reached first on a fielder's choice with two outs, and advanced 90 feet when Lassiter grounded a single through the box. Jose Mojica came up with a clutch two-out base knock a batter later, plating Ferraro just ahead of the throw from Lofton in centerfield.
Rogers argued the close call at the dish and was ejected from the contest. The Tulane alum was 2-0 against the RiverDogs coming into play, but struggled over 3.2 frames of work, surrendering three runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out three.
Mario Rodriguez entered in relief of Rogers and limited the damage in the fourth, but could not prevent Charleston from stretching its cushion to 5-1 in the fifth inning.
Mahoney got the wheels churning with a one-out single, and Ramon Flores served an opposite-field single to left to keep the inning alive for Kelvin De Leon. De Leon delivered both runners to the plate with a single through the left side on the infield.
Greene was masterful after giving up the third inning run, retiring nine of the final ten men he faced to finish his outing with a flurry. The Daytona State College product yielded only three base hits and two walks over 6.0 innings, while fanning seven Augusta hitters. The 6'4 right-hander won for the first time in 11 starts dating back to May 3 and won his first home start since July 10, 2010.
The GreenJackets staged a late rally with three eighth inning runs off RiverDogs' reliever Francisco Rondon.
Rafael Rodriguez and Lofton were issued free passes to start the frame, and Willoughby came through with his second RBI single of the night to make the score 5-2. Bobby Haney followed with a sacrifice fly to trim the Augusta deficit to 5-3, and Rondon then uncorked a wild pitch to the backstop to send Willoughby in to suddenly make it a one-run game.
Manny Barreda was summoned from the Charleston bullpen and walked Adam Duvall, but was able to get Ryan Lollis to pop out, preserving the one run lead.
Mark Montgomery then played the role of stopper in the ninth, striking out the side with an array of fastballs, sliders, and changeups. The Longwood University product collected his third save of the campaign, and has racked up nine strikeouts in 3.0 innings since being promoted from Staten Island.
