Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Charleston, SC - The Augusta GreenJackets missed out on the chance to sweep the Charleston RiverDogs for the second time this year in a three-game series as the GreenJackets fell 5-4 in the series finale between the two teams on Wednesday night. Augusta still took two of three from the RiverDogs in the series and is 10-4 against Charleston this season.

After taking an early 1-0 lead in the third on a Carlos Willoughby RBI single, things began to unravel in the bottom half of the same inning for the GreenJackets. Mike Ferraro reached on an infield single when Taylor Rogers couldn't find first while racing over to cover the bag. Garrison Lassiter reached on a sacrifice bunt when Rogers lost the handle on the baseball and couldn't throw him out. With one out, Eduardo Sosa reached on the inning's second error to load the bases. Anderson Feliz followed and drew a game-tying, bases-loaded walk. Kevin Mahoney's sacrifice fly gave Charleston their first lead at 2-1.

The third of three fourth inning RiverDogs singles ended the night for Rogers. Jose Mojica singled to center, scoring Ferraro from second despite the fact that Chris Lofton's throw arrived well ahead of Ferraro - who'd avoided the tag. When Rogers said something to home plate umpire Jose Esteras, he was ejected on the spot and his 3.2 innings go down as his shortest start of the year. Rogers (6-8) allowed three runs - one earned - on five hits and a walk while striking out three.

The RiverDogs grew their lead off Mario Rodriguez in the fifth on a two-run, two-out single by Kelvin De Leon to go up 5-1. Charleston starter Shane Greene cruised through six thanks to that lead, allowing a run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven. For Greene (3-9), the win is his first in over two months and ends a seven-decision losing streak.

The GreenJackets mounted a rally off Charleston reliever Francisco Rondon in the eighth inning, receiving back-to-back walks to open the frame. Carlos Willoughby doubled home a run to make it a 5-2 game and Bobby Haney followed by hitting a sacrifice fly to cut Charleston's lead to two. A pair of wild pitches brought Willoughby to third and to the plate with Adam Duvall hitting to make it a one-run game. Manny Barreda came into the game for Charleston to get the final out of the inning and strand the tying run at first.

Mark Montgomery walked the tying run with two outs in the ninth, but struck out pinch hitter Joel Weeks to end the game. Montgomery struck out the side and earned his third save in as many appearances.

The GreenJackets send Mike Kickham (1-5, 4.83) to the mound to open a four-game series against the Asheville Tourists at McCormick Field in Asheville. Joshua Slaats (3-1, 6.27) will oppose for the Tourists in Thursday's opener. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. from Asheville with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
