Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md. - In 16 years, only one other game in Shorebirds franchise history lasted 19-innings until Friday night when the Shorebirds defeated the West Virginia Power 5-4 in 19-innings at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. On July 24, 2000, the Shorebirds lost 4-3 to the Piedmont Boll Weevils in 19 innings. The game took five hours and five minutes and ended at 12:10 on Saturday morning.
The West Virginia Power led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning on Friday night. Ty Kelly led off with a solo home run over the left field wall to knot the game at 3-3. It was his second home run of the season.
The Power struck first in extra innings. Kevin Mort hit a leadoff double in the 12th inning. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, Mort scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Andrew Maggie.
The Shorebirds responded in the bottom of the 12th inning. Michael Ohlman and Riley Hornback hit back-to-back singles. Then, Mychal Givens hit a hard single through the right side of the infield to tie the game at 4-4.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 19th inning. Mikey Planeta started the inning with a double into right-center field. Planeta advanced to third on a groundout by Jonathan Schoop. Then, Kieron Pope hit a grounder deep behind third and Eric Avila threw wide of first base allowing Planeta to score the winning run.
Planeta and Riley Hornback each had three hits to lead a 17-hit Shorebirds attack.
Each team squandered numerous opportunities all night. The Shorebirds left 15 base runners and batted 2-for-24 with runners in scoring position while the Power left 12 runners and hit 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
D.J. Ferguson earned the win over three scoreless innings between the 17th and 19th innings. He allowed just one hit. Tim Adleman tossed six relief innings between the 11th and 16th innings and allowed just six hits and one run.
