Hagerstown Suns News Release
Hagerstown, MD- The Asheville Tourists (22-25) bested the Hagerstown Suns (28-18) on Thursday night at Municipal Stadium, winning 4-1. Game two of the series was haulted headed into the bottom of the 2nd inning with torrential winds and heavy sheets of rain complementing bolts of lightning and the soundtrack of thunder. The field tarp was applied and after a one hour, 51 minute rain delay, baseball resumed.
The Suns wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard with a run tally in the home half of the 2nd stanza. SS Jason Martinson lashed a two-out single into center field to get aboard before 3B Sean Nicol sat back and lined an RBI single to right center field, summoning home Martinson.
Suns LHP Robbie Ray, started the game, but would not factor in to the decision, going 2.0 scoreless innings. Tourists RHP Erik Stavert threw just one inning before the thunder storm, allowing no runs and fanning one.
Hagerstown would hold onto their 1-0 advantage until the 7th inning when RF Chandler Laurent launched an opposite field solo home run to begin the inning which just cleared the right field barrier off RHP Neil Holland, who went 2.0 innings and struck out four. This was Laurent's 5th homer of the 2011 campaign.
The pitcher's duel would continue through regulation as both bullpens battled it out. Asheville's RHP Taylor Reid and RHP Bruce Kern combined for 4.0 scoreless innings after 4.0 one run frames from LHP Josh Hungerman.
The Suns received scoreless 'pen work from RHP Shane McCatty (3rd, 4th, and 5th frames) and LHP Chris Manno (8th and 9th stanzas).
Tourists LHP Kraig Sitton (4-0), the winning pitcher, tossed the 10th inning and struck out 1B Brett Newsome before Nicol flew out to right field and LF Chris Curran was picked off and caught stealing.
In the 11th inning, with RHP Sam Brown on the mound for his second inning, after C Bryce Massanari doubled off the center field wall and was cut down on a fielder's choice by DH Kyle Parker 6-5, Laurent wrapped a double passed CF Bryce Harper. Then, with runners on second and third, LF Avery Barnes yanked a three-run home run over the first tier of signs in right field to apply the dagger to the Suns.
Brown (1-1), the losing pitcher, tossed 2.0 stanzas and surrendered the three earned runs on three hits.
Tourists RHP Juan Perez (10 SV), got his second save in as many games. Despite allowing a single to 2B Adrian Sanchez, Perez got a fielder's choice groundout off the bat of C David Freitas to end the game. The Suns left the tying run on deck.
Game Three on Friday night between the Suns and Tourists is slated for 6:35pm with the Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pre-Game Show taking to the air on the radio flagship station of Suns Baseball, WJEJ AM 1240, at 6:20pm.
