(Eastlake, OH) - Anthony Martinez hit a solo home run to lead off the tenth inning and the Shorebirds added two more runs and defeated the Captains 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Classic Park. With the loss, the Captains fall to 4-2 on the season. The Shorebirds opened the scoring in the second. With one out, Joe Nowicki singled to right field then stole second base. Two batters later, Brendan Monaghan drove in Nowicky to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead. The Shorebirds got an outstanding start from Cole McCurry who went five scoreless innings but did not factor in the decision as the Captains tied the game in the sixth inning off reliever Zach Clark. Adam White led off the sixth with a triple to right center field. The next two batters grounded out to the mound. Roman Pena walked and then Chris Nash singled to right scoring White. Nash was then thrown out trying to get to second when the right fielder Joe Nowicki over ran the ball but recovered in time to throw Nash out. Clark would pitch four innings and pick up the win.
Captains starter Kelvin De La Cruz went five very good innings giving up just the one run on three hits walking one and striking out a Captains season high eight batters. He did not factor in the decision. Gary Campfield relieved De La Cruz in the sixth inning and pitched three scoreless innings striking out three and giving up only one hit. Kyle Landis pitched a scoreless ninth inning but gave up three runs in the tenth inning to suffer the loss. The Shorebirds Mick Mattaliano pitched a scoreless tenth inning to pick up his second save.
