
Shorebirds Split Doubleheader With Greensboro

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds won game one of the Saturday night doubleheader at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium by a final of 5-2 and dropped game two 5-3 in extra innings. Game two of the doubleheader was decided in 12-innings and lasted 3:57 minutes. The teams combined to use ten pitchers in the second game.
GAME 1
The Shorebirds jumped on Greensboro starter Alan Oaks over the first two innings. Trent Mummey led off the bottom of the first with a triple to deep center field. Two batters later, Manny Machado bounced an infield single up the third baseline to score Mummey.
In the second inning, the Shorebirds exploded for four runs as ten batters came to the plate. Adam Gaylord and Brenden Webb both reached with singles. Then, Mummey connected on his second triple of the night to the right field wall to score both runners. Two batters later, Kieron Pope singled home Mychal Givens. Machado later scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 5-0.
Greensboro plate runs in the fourth and sixth innings but never mounted a serious rally. Marcell Ozuna hit a double in the fourth to score Isaac Galloway while Noah Perio was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth inning to bring home Christian Yelich.
Tim Adleman earned the win in five strong innings. He allowed four hits and one run. David Walters earned his second save of the 2011 season.
GAME 2
The Shorebirds grabbed an early lead in the second inning. Kipp Schutz ripped a double to the wall in left-center field to open the frame. Then, Ty Kelly singled into center field to score Schutz. The next batter, Justin Dalles, hit a towering home run over the left field wall to give the Shorebirds a 3-0 lead.
The Grasshoppers got on the board in the second inning. Isaac Galloway singled home Pedro Mendoza and Marcell Ozuna connected on a sacrifice fly to center field to score Daniel Black.
The Grasshoppers tied the game in the fifth inning.
Greensboro broke through with two runs in the 12th inning. Galloway blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall off Chris Petrini.
Shorebirds reliever Jason Gurka fanned ten batters over the course of 3.2 innings. He came on in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out and proceeded to strike out the first two batters he faced to end the threat. He fanned two in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth.
Clay Schrader also excelled in three innings of relief. He allowed just one hit and struck out four.
The five Shorebirds pitchers combined to strike out 18 batters in game two.
The Shorebirds went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 14 runners on base.
The Shorebirds and Grasshoppers close the series on Sunday, April 9 at 2:05 p.m. LHP Jacob Pettit will make his first start of the 2011 season.
