LEXINGTON, Ky. - Slade Heathcott delivered a bases-clearing triple in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 and lead Charleston to a 7-3 win over Lexington in South Atlantic League action at Whitaker Bank Ballpark Saturday evening.
Ramon Flores and Kelvin De Leon hit consecutive singles to start the inning off reliever R.J. Alaniz (0-1) and then following a strikeout, Jose Mojica slapped a single to centerfield to fill the bases. Heathcott then blistered a three-run triple to right-centerfield to give the RiverDogs a 6-3 lead. Anderson Feliz followed with a sacrifice fly to score Heathcott and up the advantage to 7-3.
Tommy Kahnle (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the RiverDogs retiring all six batters he faced in 2.0 scoreless innings, while Nathan Forer tossed a scoreless ninth to sew up the victory.
The RiverDogs put together a two-run first inning to grab a 2-0 lead, as five straight batters reached with two outs. J.R. Murphy hit his second home run in as many games for a 1-0 cushion, while Gary Sanchez reached on an error and then scored after the third of three straight two-out walks by Lexington starter Brad Dydalewicz to account for the second run of the frame.
Dydalewicz did not allow another run after the first inning, pitching 5.0 full frames with two runs scoring on three hits in taking a no-decision. The 6'1" southpaw walked five and fanned three.
Lexington was able to tie the game at 2-2 in the fourth, again with both runs scoring after two outs were recorded. Mike Kvasnicka hit a RBI triple to left field off Charleston starter Mikey O'Brien and then came home on a wild pitch to level the scoring.
Two Charleston errors in the fifth pushed the Legends into the lead, when an errant pickoff throw allowed Daniel Adamson to score from third base and give Lexington a 3-2 lead.
O'Brien penned 6.0 solid innings in his SAL debut, allowing three runs - two earned - on five hits, with one walk and four punchouts in the no-decision.
Kyle Roller re-tied the affair at 3-3 in the sixth for the RiverDogs with a RBI single off Alaniz.
Heathcott paced Charleston's offense going 2-for-5 with three RBI for the second straight night. The No. 9 prospect in the Yankees system according to Baseball America has six hits through three games this season, five of which have gone for extra bases.
Sunday's 2:05 p.m. matinee concludes the four-game set, with Charleston pitching southpaw Kramer Sneed (0-0, 0.00 ERA) against Lexington righty Carlos Quevedo (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
