Slade Heathcott's bases-loaded triple in the eighth inning broke a 3-3 tie, and the Charleston RiverDogs went on to beat the Lexington Legends 7-3 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark Saturday night.
Charleston took the lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. With two out, J.R. Murphy hit a solo home run to right field off Legends' starter Brad Dydalewicz. Gary Sanchez reached base on a throwing error by shortstop Jiovanni Mier, and three consecutive walks produced the second run.
The Legends evened the score in the fourth inning. Mier singled with one out, and scored on Mike Kvasnicka's two-out triple to left field. Kvasnicka came home with the tying run on a wild pitch by Charleston starter Mikey O'Brien.
The Legends took a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Daniel Adamson's infield popup fell for a hit when shortstop Jose Mojica lost sight of the ball. Tyler Burnett grounded to second baseman Anderson Feliz, and both runners were safe when Mojica was unable to catch Feliz' throw to second. Burnett was forced at second on Bryce Lane's attempted sacrifice bunt, leaving runners at first and third. Lane stole second, and when Murphy's throw sailed into center field, Adamson scored from third.
The RiverDogs answered in the top of the sixth against reliever Ruben Alaniz. Ramon Flores was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a single by Kelvin DeLeon, and scored on a base hit by Kyle Roller to tie the game at 3-3.
Flores and DeLeon singled to start the eighth. Roller struck out, but Mojica lined a single to center field to load the bases. Heathcott then hit a drive to the wall in center field, scoring all three runners. Heathcott scored on a sacrifice fly by Feliz to give Charleston its final run.
Tommy Kahnle (1-0), who worked the seventh and eighth innings, got the win. Alaniz (0-1), who relieved Dydalewicz in the sixth and gave up the triple to Heathcott, took the loss. The RiverDogs have won two of three in the series, which concludes Sunday afternoon at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Game time is 2:05 p.m.
