Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
The BlueClaws batted around twice, scoring four runs each in the third and the seventh to smother the Shorebirds chances on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Lakewood. The 'Claws improved to 7-9 on the year with their 9-2 triumph, their third straight win over the Shorebirds dating back to last Sunday in Salisbury.
Lakewood pounded out 14 hits-all singles-against three Delmarva pitchers. D'Arby Myers was 4-5 for the Blue Claws while Michael Taylor was 3-4. Travis Mattair, who entered the game hitting just .170, went 2-4 with three RBI on the afternoon.
Trailing 4-0 heading to the fifth, the 'Birds had their best offensive opportunity of the day, loading the bases with nobody out. Anthony Martinez, who registered his first three-hit game of the season, blooped an RBI single into right field to score a run. Brendan Monaghan proceeded to hit a sacrifice fly to center field, making the score 4-2. But Delmarva missed an opportunity to get closer, only scoring a pair in the inning.
That was the only offense they'd sustain against Lakewood starter Tyson Brummett, who endured seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out seven. Brummett earned his first victory of the season, while Cole McCurry took the loss for Delmarva. McCurry suffered one rough inning, surrendering four runs in the third before he was removed from the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth. Joe Esposito pitched two solid innings, but then was roughed up in the seventh for four runs as Lakewood's offense continued to pound Shorebird pitching.
The BlueClaws will go for the sweep of the Shorebirds on Sunday afternoon, a 1:05 first pitch from FirstEnergy Park.
