Shorebirds Never Trail in Win over Power

Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Garrett Cleavinger and Christian Turnipseed turned in four scoreless innings of relief to back an unusally erratic Ofelky Peralta in a 6-3 win over West Virginia on a damp Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Peralta (2-1) earned his second professional win after five innings of work. Peralta was a little wild in the fourth inning when he walked the first three batters of the frame, but he got a double-play ground ball and a fly ball to limit the damage to one run in the fourth and put the brakes on a Power rally. Peralta finished with five walks and five strikeouts, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits.
Delmarva (21-16) jumped out in front with a four-run third on four straight hits. Steve Laurino led off with a single to center field and Ademar Rifaela tripled him home. With the triple, Rifaela reached base safely in his 17th straight game, setting a new Shorebirds season-high.
Two pitches later, Drew Turbin singled through the middle of the diamond and brought home Rifaela for a 2-0 lead. Then Cedric Mullins hit a sinking liner into right field that was misplayed by Ryan Nagle. Mullins got credit for a single, but wound up at third base on the error, which scored Turbin. When Ryan Mountcastle came to the plate, J.T. Brubaker (2-4) uncorked a wild pitch that brought home Mullins for a 4-0 lead. Mullins finished the game 3-for-3 and is now 6-for-8 in the first two games of the series.
Trailing 4-1 in the top of the fifth, West Virginia (19-18) brought the game closer. Christian Kelley opened the inning reaching second base safely on an error by third baseman Ricardo Andujar. Alfredo Reyes immediately doubled him home to cut the Shorebirds lead to 4-2. After Tito Polo singled to left field to put runners on the corners, Mitchell Tolmann hit a sacrifice fly to left and made it a 4-3 ballgame.
Whenever the Shorebirds turn things over to Cleavinger and Turnipseed (who earned his seventh save), they like their chances. The two relievers put together outstanding work again on Tuesday night in shutting out West Virginia the remainder of the game. The Power managed three hits against them collectively, but only threatened to score once.
That threat came in the top of the ninth after Delmarva had already stretched its lead to 6-3 with two runs in the eighth. Drew Turbin led off with a double and went to third on Mullins' sacrifice bunt. Mountcastle hit a bloop single to bring Turbin around, and he went to second base shortly thereafter on a balk. After DJ Stewart walked, Alex Murphy hit an infield single towards shortstop. Reyes made a diving effort to knock the ball down, but his throw to the plate was well short and off-line and Mountcastle scored without a slide.
Delmarva and West Virginia will square off in the rubber match to wrap up the Shorebirds' homestand tomorrow morning. First pitch is set for 10:35 am. Brendan Gulick will have the broadcast beginning with Shorebirds On-Deck at 10:20 am on Fox Sports AM 960 and online at theshorebirds.com.
