Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
KINSTON, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (14-12) were defeated by the Down East Wood Ducks (16-10) 8-2 on Tuesday night in a seven-inning contest as the game was called in the top of the seventh due to weather.
The Shorebirds scored the first run of the game in the second inning as a sacrifice fly by Noelberth Romero scored Anderson De Los Santos to give Delmarva an early 1-0 lead.
The Wood Ducks quickly snatched the lead away from the Shorebirds on a two-run homer by Gleider Figereo giving Down East the lead at 2-1.
It remained 2-1 into the fourth inning until the Wood Ducks added a run to their lead with an RBI double by Cam Cauley that scored Danyer Cueva from second base, upping the Down East lead to 3-1.
The Shorebirds would cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Elio Prado that brought home Samuel Basallo, making it a 3-2 game.
But the Wood Ducks responded in a big way in the bottom of the sixth as they scored five runs with two outs, starting with a single by Ian Moller that scored Miguel Villarroel to push the Down East lead back to two at 4-2. They then broke the game open on back-to-back homers as a three-run shot by Abimelec Ortiz and a solo home run by Yosy Galan put the Shorebirds in an 8-2 hole after six innings.
Following that inning, rain began to fall and the game was sent into a weather delay and never resumed. As a result, the Shorebirds were defeated in the opening battle of the series by a score of 8-2.
Damian Mendoza (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Down East with Moises Chace (2-1) taking the loss.
Despite the defeat, Chace set a new career-high for strikeouts with eight across his three innings on the mound.
The Shorebirds will quickly turn around and face the Wood Ducks again on Wednesday afternoon at 11 a.m. with lefty Jared Beck taking the mound Delmarva.
