Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (29-36) were defeated by the Augusta GreenJackets (31-34) by a score of 5-4 in the final game of the first half on Thursday night.
After a hot start for both starting pitchers, Delmarva took the lead in the third on an error off the bat of Elio Prado as Augusta shortstop Ambioris Tavarez booted the groundball, allowing Noelberth Romero to score, making it 1-0 Delmarva.
The GreenJackets quickly snatched the lead away from the Shorebirds in the fourth as Andrew Keck brought home a pair with a two-run double to the left field wall, putting Delmarva behind 2-1.
Ethan Workinger then added to the Augusta lead with an RBI single to plate home Ambioris Tavarez, giving the GreenJackets a 3-1 edge.
The Shorebirds would put together their best inning of the night in the fifth courtesy of two Augusta errors. With the bases loaded and two outs, Samuel Basallo bounced a ball to first base that wasn't fielded cleanly by Justin Janas, allowing a run to score with the bases remaining loaded. The 'Birds took advantage of the extra out as Trendon Craig singled into center field to plate a pair of runs, giving Delmarva the lead back at 4-3.
Augusta quickly tied things up in the next half inning with a successful first-and-third steal as E.J. Exposito touched home on the play to make it a 4-4 game.
It would stay tied into the top of the ninth inning but the GreenJackets put early pressure on Delmarva by loading the bases with one out. With two strikes on Bryson Worrell, he singled into right field to score the go-ahead run. But Darlin Alcantara would induce a double play ball off the bat of E.J. Exposito to end the inning with Delmarva down just one at 5-4.
Samuel Basallo would reach base on a two-out walk and then move to second on a wild pitch, but Landon Harper struck out Trendon Craig to end the game with Augusta holding on for the 5-4 win.
Landon Harper (5-3) earned the win in relief with Darlin Alcantara (3-4) taking the loss for the Shorebirds.
Trendon Craig led the offense with two more hits to up his current on-base streak to 16 games as he singled, doubled, and drove home two runs in the game. Starting pitcher, Juan De Los Santos, set a new season-best for strikeouts as he fanned 8 GreenJackets across 3.2 innings on the mound.
