June 22, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
On the final night of the first half of the season, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell 5-4 to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers in a rain-shortened five-inning contest on Thursday night. The loss drops the Pelicans to a 39-26 record while the Cannon Ballers improved to 35-30.
It was an impressive night at the plate for Parker Chavers (2-3, HR, 2B, 3 RBI) with a double and three-run home run. Andy Garriola (1-3, RBI) knocked in the other run with a single.
Just two pitchers were used in the shortened game with Erian Rodriguez (4-4) taking the loss after allowing three runs, two earned in his two innings of work. Starter Marino Santy lasted three innings with a pair of earned runs and four walks allowed while collecting six strikeouts. Both pitchers allowed a home run in the loss.
Kannapolis used the long ball to push themselves past Myrtle Beach as Tim Elko (2-3, HR, 2B, 2 RBI) hit a two-run homer in the first and Jacob Burke (1-2, HR, 2 RBI, BB) hit a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead.
Peyton Pallette tossed the first four frames and sacrificed four earned runs off five hits and two walks in his start. Reliever Ben Beutel (2-0) would take the win with one shutout inning and Manuel Veloz earned the save by grabbing the final two outs of the top of the fifth.
The Cannon Ballers grabbed an early lead as Elko hit his league-leading 16th home run to deep center field with one on and one out in the first inning.
All four Myrtle Beach runs came in the top of the third. With a runner on second, Garriola lined an RBI single up the middle to plate the run. Following a Juan Mora single, Chavers pulled a three-run homer over the wall in right to give the Birds a 4-2 lead.
Kannapolis grabbed the lead back with a three-run bottom of the fifth. With one on and one out, Burke hit a home run to left field to tie the game at four. Later in the inning with two outs and a runner on third, Jhoneiker Betancourt reached on a fielding error by Ismael Mena in center field as Elko scored from third to give the home team a 5-4 lead. Rain would force an early ending after five innings.
The second half begins tomorrow as the Pelicans continue their series with the Cannon Ballers at 7:00 p.m.
