Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (28-36) survived a late rally by the Augusta GreenJackets (30-34) in Tuesday's series opener as they edged the Atlanta Braves affiliate 3-2.
Augusta scored the first run of the game in the third on an RBI single by Justin Janas to plate Tyler Collins, giving the GreenJackets a 1-0 edge.
But that lead would be short-lived as Elio Prado catapulted the Shorebirds in front with a two-run homer to the opposite field with two outs in the inning to make it 2-1 Shorebirds.
Trendon Craig followed Prado in the next inning with a home run of his own the opposite way, to extend the Shorebirds' lead to 3-1.
The game would be locked in at 3-1 for most of the night thanks to good pitching from both sides. After Jared Beck went three innings on the mound to start, Cesar Alvarez tossed three, near-perfect inning to hold the 3-1 lead into the seventh.
Augusta starter Jorge Bautista dealt seven innings on the rubber, allowing just three runs on four hits with all the runs coming in on the two homers.
Luis Sanchez then entered in the seventh for Delmarva and despite some traffic, Sanchez dealt two scoreless frames including leaving the bases loaded in the eighth.
In the ninth, things got interesting fast after three consecutive errors with one out-plated a run, and putting the tying run at second base. With two outs, Ethan Workinger singled up the middle in the infield, and after a slight bobble by Rolphy Cruz on the diving stop, the GreenJackets tried to sneak home the tying run from third but Cruz recovered and made a strong throw to home, cutting down Justin Janas and end the ball game with Delmarva winning 3-2.
Cesar Alvarez (1-0) was awarded the win in relief with Hugo Beltran (2) notching his second save. Jorge Bautista (4-4) was saddled with the loss for the GreenJackets.
The home runs by Elio Prado and Trendon Craig were the difference on Tuesday night with Craig's home run in the fourth extending his on-base streak to 15 games, the longest by a Shorebird this season.
The series continues on Wednesday night as Juan De Los Santos gets the call for Delmarva against Spencer Schwellenbach for Augusta. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
