Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Salisbury, MD - The Augusta GreenJackets (Atlanta Braves) had the tying run thrown out at home plate as the Delmarva Shorebirds (Baltimore Orioles) held on for the series-opening win. Augusta (30-34) got another quality start from Jorge Bautista, but the Shorebirds (28-36) used two homers to break a four-game losing skid.

The GreenJackets began their only trip to Maryland in positive fashion, with their first two batters reaching on a walk and hit by pitch. However, Augusta could not capitalize, before the Shorebirds sent up the minimum against Jorge Bautista in the bottom of the frame. Both teams went in order in the second, before Augusta opened the scoring on a Justin Janas RBI single to make it 1-0.

In the bottom of the third, a two-out infield single led to an Elio Prado home run that just blooped over the 309-foot marker in the right field corner to put the Shorebirds on top 2-1. In the next frame, Trendon Craig hit a solo homer to right to extend the Shorebirds' lead to two. The GreenJackets were held to just one hit over the first six frames, and despite Jorge Bautista making it through six innings for the fourth straight outing Augusta was not able to provide him with the lead.

Bautista's night was done after seven innings, as he picked up his league-leading third quality start of the year with seven frames of work. Ronaldo Alesandro pitched a scoreless eighth, but the GreenJackets entered the ninth down 3-1. In the top of the ninth, Tyler Collins reached on an error, before Ambioris Tavarez also reached on a misplayed ground ball. With two runners aboard, Justin Janas hit into a forceout at second that then resulted in a ball thrown out of play, which scored Collins from second. With the tying run on second, Ethan Workinger singled up the middle, but Janas was caught trying to score from second by a good throw and the ballgame ended at home plate.

The GreenJackets are on the road for two weeks to visit Delmarva (Baltimore Orioles) and Columbia (Kansas City Royals), before returning to SRP Park for a 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza! For tickets and more, go to greenjacketsbaseball.com.
