Hagerstown Suns News Release
SALISBURY, MD - After exciting wins in their first two games of the season, the Hagerstown Suns (2-1) lost their first game of 2008 in similar fashion.
The Suns were defeated 4-3, after the Delmarva Shorebirds scored two runs in the home half of the eighth inning. Hagerstown had scored once in the top of the eighth, but it proved to not be enough, as Delmarva rallied for a pair of runs off Suns reliever Martin Beno.
Beno took the loss for the Suns in his first appearance of 2008, allowing two runs while recording just two outs. Brian Parker (1-0) earned the victory for Delmarva, while Mick Mattaliano got credit for the save.
Starting pitcher Cole Kimball pitched well in his first appearance for Hagerstown. Kimball allowed one earned run and struck out seven hitters in five innings of work. Atahualpa Severino pitched in relief for the Suns, and was credited for a blown save as he allowed one run in his two innings of work.
Aaron Seuss and Stephen Englund led the way offensively for Hagerstown with two hits apiece. Seuss had two singles and an RBI, while Englund had a single and a double with one run scored. First baseman Bill Rhinehart also reached base twice in the game and scored two runs for the Suns.
David Cash, Joe Mahoney and Kieron Pope all had hits in the pivotal eighth inning rally for Delmarva, and Joe Nowicki had two hits in the game to pace the Shorebirds attack.
