Hickory Crawdads News Release

After months of off-season anticipation and two rain outs to start the year, the Hickory Crawdads and West Virginia Power each got a win to kick off 2008, splitting at doubleheader at L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday night. After West Virginia took game one, 5-3, Hickory sent its fans home with a smile in game two, winning in extra innings by a score of 3-2.

Crawdads catcher Chris Jones -- who missed all of 2007 with a shoulder injury and did not play in game one -- played hero in game two when he drove in Erik Huber from second base on a single to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie. As part of a doubleheader, the game was only scheduled to last seven frames.

Game one saw West Virginia capitalize on one fortuitous inning, when the Power sent 10 hitters to the plate in the top of the 5th. Crawdads reliever Matt Foust allowed four runs on two hits, three walks, two hit batsmen and one wild pitch in taking the loss.

In game one, John Alonso homered for West Virginia (1-1) and Ronald Pena went yard for Hickory (1-1). Game two saw a home run from Hickory's Marcus Davis, which had momentarily put the Crawdads ahead 2-1 late in the game.

Jared Sutton (1-0) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for West Virginia to earn the win. Foust took the loss (0-1) while Wes Etheridge recorded the save (1).

In game two, Carlos Amaro (1-0) threw a scoreless 8th inning in relief to earn the win for Hickory, while Corey Frerichs (0-1) surrendered Jones' walk-off single to suffer the loss.

Other notable performances for the Crawdads included game one starter Duke Welker (ND, 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) and game two starter Jose Diaz (ND, 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K).

The Crawdads and Power get back to action for another doubleheader Sunday afternoon, with first pitch slated for 3. It will be the last time West Virginia visits Hickory this season.
