Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
The Shorebirds earned their first victory of the season Saturday night, scoring two in the eighth to catapult themselves over the Suns. With two outs, Joe Mahoney singled home David Cash to tie the game at three. The next batter, Kieron Pope, doubled down the right field line to give Delmarva their first lead of the game. Mick Mattaliano's perfect ninth preserved the triumph for Delmarva.
Hagerstown opened the game with a single run in each of the first two innings and had a chance to break it open in the third. But Delmarva starter Luis Noel was able to escape a bases loaded jam, keeping the deficit manageable for the Shorebirds.
Delmarva was hitless of Hagerstown starter Cole Kimball through the first four innings, but finally broke through in the fifth. Pope walked to lead off the frame. Joe Nowicki singled and the Shorebirds had runners on the corners with nobody out. With Calvin Lester batting, a wild pitch allowed Pope to advance the final 90 feet and cross the plate for Delmarva. The Shorebirds tied it up in the sixth on an rbi groundout by Joe Mahoney.
When Hagerstown took a 3-2 lead in the eighth, it appeared that the Suns would once again hold off Delmarva in the late innings. For the first time this season, however, the Shorebirds were able to tally a few clutch hits. Martin Beno took the loss for Hagerstown, yielding two runs(one earned) in the eighth).
Brian Parker pitched the seventh and eighth for Delmarva, allowing one run on one hit, and picked up his first victory. Mattaliano's 1-2-3 ninth gave him the save.
The Shorebirds try to split the four game series at 2:05pm on Sunday.
