Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md. - West Virginia first baseman Chase Lyles hit a two-run homer in the top of the tenth inning to lift the Power to a 5-3 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds have lost twelve straight games and have not won at home since August 10.
The Shorebirds were first to strike in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Joe Oliveira hit a gentle grounder to the right side and Lyles mishandled the ball, allowing Garabez Rosa to score.
Tim Berry held the Power scoreless over five innings in his final start of the season. He allowed only one hit. The left-hander retired eight batters in a row between the first and fourth innings.
The Power scored three runs in the sixth inning against relief pitcher Mike Wright. Dan Grovatt, Chase Lyles and Justin Howard drove in runs to give the Power a 3-1 lead. All nine batters in the lineup came to the plate.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Shorebirds tied the game at 3-3. Mikey Planeta hit a leadoff single. Two batters later, Garabez Rosa belted a two-run homer over the left-center field wall. It was his second homer of the season.
The score remained tied at three heading into the bottom of the ninth. Power relief pitcher Vincent Payne walked the bases loaded with one out. The Shorebirds were unable to capitalize as Joe Oliveira grounded out to short and Brenden Webb bounced out to second.
In the top of the tenth, Kyle Simon entered out of the bullpen. He hit the first batter of the inning, Kevin Mort. Two batters later, Chase Lyles hit a two-run homer to left field to lift the Power in front 5-3.
Payne picked up the win while closer Jason Townsend earned his 13th save by tossing a scoreless tenth inning.
Mike Wright tossed three scoreless innings after the 3-run sixth inning for West Virginia.
The Shorebirds and Power play game four of the series on Sunday night at 5:05 p.m. RHP Jake Cowan is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
