HICKORY, NC - LHP Will Lamb, RHP Ben Rowen and RHP Francisco Mendoza combined to toss a two-hit, 3-0 win for the Hickory Crawdads in the second seven-inning game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Greenville Drive, before 2,772 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium. The Drive won the first seven-inning game, 9-2.
Game 1:
The Drive (76-61, 38-29) moved in front early by taking advantage of a pair of Crawdads errors in the top of the second inning. After C Christian Vasquez and SS Xander Bogaerts worked walks to start the inning, both later scored when two miscues were committed on a ground ball hit to the right side of the infield by 1B Drew Hedman, making it 2-0.
The Crawdads (78-56, 38-28) pulled even when they plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning against RHP Kyle Stroup (W, 6-6). DH Kevin Torres made his Hickory debut by singling his way on to start the frame. Torres took second on a sacrifice fly, advancing next to third base on a ground out. 2B Odubel Herrera got the 'Dads on the board with an RBI single to right field that scored Torres. Telis followed with a base hit, and then 3B Christian Villanueva tied the game, 2-2, with an RBI single, scoring Herrera from second base.
Greenville moved back in front with a third unearned run against RHP Ben Henry (L, 6-3) in the fourth inning, and then stretched the lead with a solo bomb by SS Xander Bogaerts against RHP Jose Monegro in the sixth, making it 4-2. The Drive opened the gap further with a five-run frame in the top of the seventh, including an RBI double by 3B David Renfroe, who later scored on a wild pitch, and a three-run homer by Vasquez, capping the 9-2 win for Greenville.
Game 2:
Crawdads LHP Will Lamb (W, 2-0) retired the side in order in the top of the first, setting the tone for his five-inning start. Lamb dealt the first four frames in no-hit fashion, and only surrendered a bloop single to RF Henry Ramos that started the fifth and broke up the no-hitter. Aside from the one hit, Lamb walked only one while striking out eight in his five scoreless stanzas.
While Lamb kept Greenville (76-62, 38-30) off the board early, the Crawdads (79-56, 39-28) jumped in front in the bottom of the first inning against RHP Scott Swinson (L, 5-5). SS Jurickson Profar led off with a solo blast over the right field wall, putting Hickory in the 1-0 lead right away. CF Jake Skole and DH Tomas Telis followed the homer with consecutive singles, putting runners at the corners. Skole then raced home on a double play hit into by 3B Christian Villanueva, giving the 'Dads the 2-0 advantage.
The 'Dads tacked on another tally in the bottom of the fifth frame. LF Jonathan Roof singled to start the inning and took second on a Profar sacrifice bunt. After Skole walked, Telis plated Roof from second base with an RBI single to right field, making it 3-0.
RHP Ben Rowen dealt a perfect sixth inning, before RHP Francisco Mendoza slammed the door by striking out the side in the top of the seventh, closing the 3-0 win for Hickory.
