Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds squandered a two-run lead in the ninth inning and lost 5-4 in 11-innings to the West Virginia Power at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Monday afternoon. The Shorebirds close the season with a 55-85 record and a 14-game losing streak.
West Virginia jumped on the board early on a home run by Chase Lyles off Matt Bywater.
Bywater settled down and achieved a career high with ten strikeouts. He scattered five hits over six full innings.
The Shorebirds took the lead in the second inning. Joe Oliveira hit a leadoff solo home run over the left field wall. Then, Garabez Rosa hit a flare double down the right field line. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Brenden Webb.
In the fifth inning, the Shorebirds added to their lead. Riley Hornback started the inning with a double. Two batters later, Mike Mooney singled down the left field line and Dan Grovatt mishandled the ball, allowing Hornback to turn third and score.
The Shorebirds held a 4-2 lead heading into the ninth inning and David Walters entered out of the bullpen. Shortstop Garabez Rosa committed back-to-back errors to allow the first two men to reach. After a sacrifice bunt by Kawika Emsley-Pai, the Power had runners at second and third with just one out. Dan Grovatt singled to right field to score Wes Freeman. Then, Eric Avila singled off the left ankle of Walters to tie the game at 4-4. D.J. Ferguson entered for the injured Walters and stranded the go-ahead run at third.
In the 11th inning, Mel Rojas, Jr. hit a triple to the left-center field wall to score Eric Avila from first to give the Power a 5-4 edge.
Power reliever Casey Sadler finished off the Shorebirds in order to end the game.
Sadler earned the win while Ferguson was tagged with the loss.
