Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Devin Harris's fifth inning RBI single put the Augusta GreenJackets on top 3-2 and Augusta pitching made the lead stand as the GreenJackets defeated the Rome Braves in their regular season finale on Monday afternoon by a 3-2 score at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
With two outs in the fifth, Adam Duvall drilled a double to left field and scored the eventual winning run on Harris's base hit. GreenJackets pitching made the lead stand as Taylor Rogers finished a solid seven-inning effort and handed off to the bullpen, where Gaspar Santiago and Jose Valdez were perfect over the final two innings to seal the win. Valdez got his second save of the season with his 1-2-3 ninth.
Rogers (12-10) allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings with a strikeout as he finished the regular season on a strong note, winning five of his last six starts.
The Braves struck first off Rogers in the second inning, getting a man on first with Edward Salcedo's two-out bunt single. Matt Weaver followed with a triple off the centerfield wall to put the Braves up 1-0. Rome added another run in the third on back-to-back doubles by Matt Lipka and Tommy LaStella to go up by two.
Augusta tied the game at two in an unusual third inning. With two outs and a man at second, Joel Weeks hit a fly ball to shallow left field. Rome left fielder Kyle Rose collided with shortstop Matt Lipka and the ball fell in for a base hit, scoring Kelby Tomlinson with Augusta's first run. With Weeks at second, Adam Duvall hit a pop fly on the infield that fell in safely on the right side due to miscommunication to allow Duvall to reach and Weeks to score the tying run.
Ronan Pacheco threw well for the Braves, but was victimized by sloppy defense. In his six innings, Pacheco (5-9) allowed three runs - two earned - on eight hits and a pair of walks while striking out four.
The GreenJackets finish the 2011 regular season with a 70-68 overall record under first-year manager Lipso Nava, with a 39-29 mark in the second half. With Lexington's win in game one of a doubleheader against Savannah, the GreenJackets still are alive for postseason contention. If the Legends win game two and sweep the Sand Gnats, the GreenJackets will qualify and will host game one of the Southern Divisional Playoffs on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Playoff tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
