Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (11-9) and Charleston RiverDogs (12-7) returned to action on Friday night after Thursday's game was postponed, and it would be the Tampa Bay Rays affiliate coming through with a win as they defeated the Shorebirds 8-4.
Delmarva fell behind quickly in the first as Charleston scored three runs on five hits. Jhon Diaz drove in the first run with an RBI single, followed by a two-run base hit by Randelis Martinez to make it 3-0 RiverDogs.
But the Shorebirds would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the second inning as Angel Tejada scored Noelberth Romero with a double to the right field wall to trim the deficit to 3-1.
Charleston would then push their lead up to four runs on an RBI triple by Jhon Diaz. He'd score moments later on a sacrifice fly, making it 5-1 in favor of the RiverDogs.
An inning later, Charleston added another run on a throwing error to extend their lead to five.
In the sixth, two more runs scored on RBI singles by Cooper Kinney and Ryan Spikes to put the Shorebirds in an 8-1 hole.
Delmarva would look to ignite a rally in the seventh as Brayan Hernandez hit a solo home run to make it an 8-2 game.
Rolphy Cruz drove in a pair in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run double, scoring Trendon Craig and Noelberth Romero to pull the 'Birds with four at 8-4.
They'd make things very interesting in the ninth as they put aboard three-straight, two-out base runners to bring the tying run to the plate in Trendon Craig. But Gerlin Rosario would get Craig to bounce out to third to end the ball game with Charleston winning 8-4.
Both starters factored into the final decision as Trevor Martin (6-4) earned the win for Charleston with Juan De Los Santos (1-7) taking the loss for the Shorebirds.
Delmarva and Charleston get set to play two games on Saturday with Edgar Portes facing Marcus Johnson in game one starting at 5:05, Deivy Cruz will pitch against Yoniel Curet in the second game that will begin 30 minutes after the first game.
