Birds Blanked by Fireflies 4-0

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans dropped their third straight game on Friday night with a 4-0 loss to the Columbia Fireflies. With the loss, the Birds dropped to 50-37 and 11-11 on the season, while the Fireflies improved to 47-40 and 12-10 in the second half. Friday's game saw the celebration of "Christmas in July" with Christmas-themed games and photos with Santa.

In their eighth shutout loss of the season, the Pelicans racked up just five hits with Reivaj Garcia (3-3, BB) leading the way with three singles. Myrtle Beach stranded eight runners and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Friday's loss went to starter Grant Kipp (2-6) who allowed three earned runs in his four innings, including a home run. Kipp ended his start by retiring the final seven batters he faced. Erian Rodriguez followed with an earned run in his three innings in relief.

Columbia turned six hits into four runs with the big one coming from Brett Squires (1-4, HR, 2 RBI) with a two-run home run in the first inning. Daniel Vazquez (2-3, RBI, BB) logged a multi-hit games and also brought a run in.

With four shutout innings out of the bullpen, Oscar Rayo (3-0) earned the win with just two hits allowed and three strikeouts. In his first Single-A start, Hunter Patteson struck out two in his three innings and allowed three hits.

The visitor began the game with a bang as Squires hit a two-run home run with two outs to right to put the Fireflies on top first. It was Squires' sixth home run of the year.

Columbia put up another run in the second with two outs. With the bases loaded, Vazquez worked a walk to bring in the third run to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Fireflies put their final run on the board in the top of the sixth. With a runner on third and two outs, Rodriguez threw a wild pitch to score the final run.

The series continues on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m.
