Shorebirds' Bats Lift Them to 8-6 Victory

Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds (20-24) used a consistent offensive attack to defeat the Lakewood BlueClaws (19-25) in the series finale, 8-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds recorded 13 hits after totaling just seven in their prior four games.

Lakewood scored in the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead. Roman Quinn reached on a wind-aided single in shallow left field. He stole second and later scored on a groundout by William Carmona.

The Shorebirds answered in the second. Nik Balog led off with a double to right-center field. He tagged up to third on a fly ball to right field by Torsten Boss. Then, Joel Hutter grounded to shortstop and Balog scored.

In the third, the Shorebirds took their first lead. Anthony Caronia reached on an infield single behind the mound. Caronia stole second and advanced to third on a bunt single by Lucas Herbst. Then, Tucker Nathans singled to the right side of the infield to plate Caronia. Two batters later, Boss grounded to first and Art Charles had the ball go through his legs and down the right field line, allowing Herbst to score.

Lakewood trimed the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to center by former Shorebirds catcher Justin Dalles.

In the fifth inning, the Shorebirds built a 5-2 lead. With one out, Tucker Nathans hit a line drive homer to right field, his sixth of the season. Balog followed with a double to the wall in left-center field. Then, Boss singled to right-center to score Balog.

After the BlueClaws scored two runs in the sixth to trim the gap to one again, the Shorebirds scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Nathans singled home Lorenzo, who reached on an error. In the seventh, Steel Russell hit a two out double to deep right field to score Hutter.

Lakewood countered again with two runs in the eighth to pull back within one.

The Shorebirds got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Nathans tripled off the center field wall. He scored on a Balog sacrifice fly to left-center field.

Matt Price entered in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and held the BlueClaws in check. He stranded two runners in the ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the season.

Shorebirds starter Matt Taylor earned the win over six innings. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs.

The Shorebirds begin a seven-game road trip on Thursday, May 22 against the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
