Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - In a game in which the two teams stranded 25 runners, the Charleston RiverDogs doubled the Gnats' scoring output in a 4-2 win over Savannah. The 'Dogs (26-17) expanded their lead over the Gnats (25-19) to 1.5 games for first place as Savannah slipped back to third place in the Southern Division.
DH Kevin Plawecki was 3-for-5 with an RBI to extend his consecutive games on-base streak to 32 straight.
The RiverDogs scored the game's first run in the top of the first. Leadoff man Jake Cave singled and after a single and a groundout, scored on 3B Dante Bichette Jr.'s single into left field. Bichette finished 2-for-5.
Charleston made it 2-0 with an unearned run in the fourth off Savannah starter Rainy Lara. RF Yeicock Calderon doubled and came home with two outs when Gnats' third baseman Jeff Reynolds dropped a bunt attempt.
The Gnats scored their first run in the fourth. LF Stefan Sabol doubled and scored on Reynolds' double down the right field line.
The RiverDogs added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings on RBI singles by LF Taylor Dugas and DH Kelvin De Leon respectively.
Savannah mounted a late charge in the ninth, scoring a run, and putting the tying runs on base. SS Philip Evans began the inning with a double, and two outs later RF Maikis De La Cruz was hit by a pitch. Batting as the tying run, Plawecki blooped a single into shallow right field to score Evans from third. However, with two outs and two on, 1B Cole Frenzel flew out to centerfield to end the game.
Charleston reliever Dietrich Enns earned the win for throwing three scoreless innings of relief with six strikeouts. Lara was charged with the loss to fall to 2-4.
