Salisbury, MD - The Lakewood BlueClaws (19-25) led early, but were forced to play comeback kids after the third and could never eclipse the Delmarva Shorebirds (20-25) in the 8-6 loss Wednesday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The BlueClaws took two of three from Delmarva in a series for the second time this season.

Delmarva picked up two unearned runs in the third, and broke a 1-1 tie to take their first lead of the game. Anthony Caronia reached on a fielding error by the pitcher Miguel Nunez to begin the inning.

With two on and one out it was Nathans with an RBI single that scored Caronia put the home team up 2-1. Two batters later, it was Lucas Herbst scoring the second run of the frame on a groundball that went right through the wickets of Art Charles at first off the bat of Torsten Boss.

Down 3-1 in the fourth, the BlueClaws notched a run and took advantage of some shoddy defense by the 'Birds. Nik Balog allowed Willie Carmona to each via an error and a wild pitch by Matt Taylor put him into scoring position with no outs.

Charles extended his on base streak to 22 with a single that put runners at the corners. Carmona scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Dalles to cut the deficit to one, but Larry Greene, Jr. hit into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.

In the fifth it was Nathans hitting a solo home run to right and Boss with an RBI single that put the 'Birds up 5-2.

The Claws continued to chip away and added a pair of runs in the sixth inning. With one down, Carlos Tocci singled, was moved up to third on a Carmona single, and scored on a wild pitch from Taylor. Dalles notched his second RBI of the game with a single that scored Carmona and pulled the 'Claws within one at 5-4.

The seesaw battle continued as the 'Birds scored a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Nathans. They upped the lead to 7-4 with another run in the seventh.

The first four men of the eighth reached for Lakewood, two of which scored. Greene, Jr. brought home the first run with a bases loaded walk and Alejandro Villalobos chipped in with a two out RBI single, which pulled the 'Claws within one at 7-6.

Delmarva added an insurance run in the bottom half of the frame, and Matt Price locked it down in the ninth to finish off Lakewood for good in the ballgame.

For the second game in a row, the BlueClaws jumped out to an early lead over the Shorebirds. Roman Quinn began the first inning with an infield pop up that was overrun and played into a single by the second baseman Tucker Nathans.

Quinn then stole second, was moved to third on a groundout, and scored on Willie Carmona's groundout to short to give the BlueClaws the 1-0 advantage.

The Shorebirds bounced back for a run and tied it in the second. Nik Balog smoked a double into the gap to lead off the inning and scored on Joel Hutter's RBI groundout to short.

Nunez (4-1) couldn't make it out of the fifth and suffered his first loss of the season. The righty allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits; he walked one and struck out one in the affair. The next three pitchers used by the Claws each gave up a run in their respective innings to finish the game.

Taylor (3-3) made it through six innings for Delmarva and left in line for the win. The lefty allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits; he didn't walk anyone and struck out three.

Chace Numata was not in the starting lineup, but entered the game as a pinch runner in the eighth. He made one appearance at the plate in the ninth, and was hit by a pitch that extended his streak to 23 straight games.
