Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia beat Kannapolis 9-3 on Tuesday. Orlando Castro pitched six shutout innings for his fourth win of the season. The Power took a 2-0 lead on a Stetson Allie home run in the first, added one run in the second on a Max Moroff single, plated three in the fourth, and added three more in the sixth on home runs by Dilson Herrera and Allie. Herrera drove in four on three hits, Allie brought home three runs, and Moroff drove in the other two to help West Virginia clinch this series. Kannapolis scored a run in the eighth and plated two in the ninth against Power reliever Ryan Hafner.
TWO TIMES THREE: Stetson Allie hit two home runs in a single game for the third time this season. The infielder now has 12 total, tied for second most in the league, and after only 45 games is six behind Willy Garcia's team high during the entire 2012 season. Allie also hit two home runs on April 13 at Ashville and April 29 at Savannah. The infielder is on a six game hitting streak, batting .458 with four home runs and nine runs batted in dating back to May 17.
NO FEAR: The Power close out their only first half series against the Intimidators today. with two straight wins in this set, West Virginia is now 21-23 in Kannapolis since 2005. Kannapolis still holds a five win lead in the all-time series dating back to 2005, at 45-40. These teams will meet in Kannapolis in early July for a three game set and then play four in Charleston later that month.
ROSTER REINFORCEMENT: Josh Smith was promoted back to the Power roster this morning in time for today's finale at Kannapolis. The southpaw has appeared in 12 games this season for West Virginia, going 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA. Smith was transferred to the Jamestown Jammers roster on May 16 when Clay Holmes was activated from the Disabled List. To make room for Smith, Pittsburgh transferred Orlando Castro to Jamestown. Castro leads the team in wins and ERA, but should be promoted back to the roster in time for a start against Lakewood this weekend.
ONE TWO PUNCH: Stetson Allie and Josh Bell are now one and two atop the South Atlantic League in runs batted in, though Allie has moved into the top spot after Tuesday's game. Allie has driven in six this series with Bell has brought home two, giving the duo 38 and 37, respectively.
DIVISIONAL RUN: West Virginia is 7-5 within the South Atlantic League's Northern Division; by far the fewest divisional games played by any team in the league this season. The Charleston RiverDogs have played the second fewest games in their own division at 19. The Power do, however, play nothing but Northern Division games for the remainder of the first half. In fact, the next 40 games are all against divisional opponents.
