Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Texas League office this morning announced that Matt Shoemaker was named Texas League Pitcher of the Week for July 18-24, the third time this season the Travs right hander has picked up the weekly award. Sunday evening at ONEOK Field, Shoemaker dealt seven impressive innings for a 5-1 victory that snapped the Travs' 7-game losing streak and lowered his league-best ERA to 2.22.
Over two starts last week, Shoemaker gave up just two runs and only one earned run over 16 innings for a 0.56 ERA. He faced 60 batters without a walk and struck out 12 bringing his season strikeout-to-walk ratio to 5.3 (18 w/95 k). The Travelers became the only team perhaps in the history of professional baseball to lose a no-hitter and hit into a triple play during Shoemaker's 1-0 loss to NW Arkansas on Tuesday.
The Eastern Michigan University product also was named TL Pitcher of the Week for July 4-10 and June 13-20. Currently the leader amongst all minor league pitchers with five complete games, Shoemaker's 2.22 ERA ranks fourth amongst any pitcher at Double-A. The 130.2 innings he's worked for the Travelers and Salt Lake this season rank in a tie for most in the minor leagues.
